High touch meets high tech: Da Vinci surgery program offers quick recovery

As a salon owner and a busy mother, Jodee Stamm could not afford “downtime.’ She is also an avid outdoors woman, plus, she didn’t want to miss out on gardening and some camping. Stamm needed a gynecology surgery and she needed to be back on her feet as soon as possible.

“My biggest concern was being laid up for six to eight weeks,” Stamm said. “Being a small-business owner, I wasn’t comfortable having to be off that long.”

Before her surgery, Stamm was a nervous wreck. She was concerned about going through surgery. She worried about bouncing back. Her doctor, Dr. Keith Martin of Monroe Clinic reassured her it would not be difficult. A new surgical procedure was available to her.

Robots performing surgery?

This is not science fiction. This is the da Vinci System, the latest tool in a long line of laparoscopic advances. While robotics were introduced in the operating room more than 20 years ago, the da Vinci program takes surgery and recovery to a futuristic level.

Two surgeons at Monroe Clinic debuted the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System last fall. Since then, Dr. John Mazley, and Dr. Keith Martin have performed dozens of gynecology surgeries with the advanced laparoscopic tool. Patients like Stamm and Jackie Kundert said they are pleased with the results. It offered them quicker recovery times, less blood loss and fewer painful side effects.

A Doctor’s View

The da Vinci Surgical System has quickly become a worldwide phenomenon. While surgeons like Bazley and Martin have been performing laparoscopic procedures for years, da Vinci’s flexible robotic arms and 10-times optical camera lens have taken minimally invasive surgery to a whole new level.

“Having the da Vinci system at Monroe Clinic is remarkable — it’s unique to have such an advanced tool in a hometown hospital,” Martin said. “While the technology is great, I like that I have time to build a bond and trust with my patients, and I know they’re thankful they don’t have to drive to a big city or get put on a long waiting list to get the latest in advanced care.”

The da Vinci will be used in general surgery, urology and women’s health, starting with hard-to-reach, confined areas with dense nerves and tissue.

“It’s very possible that, as doctors, we will learn more things about anatomy than we ever thought possible. We can magnify the inside of the body, peek around organs, muscles and tissues without cutting or applying torque. I can see things live and in real time that I’ve never seen before. It’s like a science fiction movie where they miniaturize a surgeon and put them in a body to explore.” said Dr. Bazley.

Intuitive Surgical 1Q Profit Up 22% As Da Vinci Sales Keep Rising

Sales of pricey equipment like the da Vinci robots slowed during the recession as hospitals looked to control costs. The climate for da Vinci sales has been helped recently by continued competition among hospitals to offer robotic surgery.

Da Vinci Robotic Surgery in Turkey | Robotics Technology

Da Vinci surgery is a sort of robotic surgery of that enables much less invasive and a lot more precise surgical strategies and procedures in a number of medical fields. Among one of the most recent innovative surgical technologies, da Vinci robotic surgery offers surgeons a lot more options for minimally invasive as well as complex and complex surgical procedures. Da Vinci surgery is an choice in a variety of medical surgical fields, including:

General surgery – colorectal cancer or bariatric surgical procedures De Vinci robotic surgery utilizes numerous forms of robotic equipment, such as robotic assisted laparoscopic, endoscopic, and thoracoscopy surgical procedures. Robotic surgery combines pc assisted technologies with fine surgical tools to provide enhanced access to various body areas, often utilizing special scopes and equipment controlled by surgeons via a monitor in the operating room.

Robotic surgery enables and surgeons to make very precise and controlled movements than traditional open-surgical strategies and procedures. Robotic surgery requires only extremely little 1 to two centimeter length incisions rather than the large incisions traditionally needed for quite a few fundamental surgical procedures.

For example, an individual requiring coronary bypass may possibly no longer be needed to undergo open chest surgery that involves an 8 to 10-inch chest incision, cut ribs and sternum, and prospective internal organ damage, bleeding or potential life threatening complications. Utilizing da Vinci robotic surgery, individuals will instead be able to undergo the procedure with a minimum of several small 1 to 2-cm lengthy incisions between the ribs for access to the cardiac muscle.

The same benefits apply to other forms of general surgery, gynecological surgical procedures, and surgical procedures to larger organs such as the prostate, kidneys, and bladder to smaller organs such as the thyroid.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

A number of benefits over conventional surgery can be enjoyed by patients picking this technology, including:

Decreased risk of infection Quicker recovery time

State-of-the-art robotic and pc technology enables a surgeon to view the operating field through a special scope, utilizing fine hand movements that correspond with moments of robotic arms utilizing miniaturized equipment attached to the surgeon’s wrist. The surgeon controls the movements of the robotic arms and instruments in a magnified field viewer within the operating room, allowing surgeons to perform even the most hard and complex surgical procedures regardless of operating region size.
