Local symposium to address global issues

A symposium to help North Carolina residents respond to global issues such as climate change, poverty and social injustice will take place on Saturday, April 30, at Unity Center of Peace, 8800 Seawell School Road, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants will explore the culture and how it contributes to current problems. Experts on topics as diverse as the current state of the Earth's biodiversity and the reality of the socio-economic disparity in the world will speak. Nancy Carnes, a former monastic and now Forestry Management Specialist with the Sustainable Furnishings Council, will facilitate. The event is called "Awakening the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium" and is an initiative of the Pachamama Alliance, a San Francisco-based non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the Earth's tropical rainforests by empowering indigenous peoples. For the ninth year, eight area churches are sponsoring a Holy Week Labyrinth Walk for the public. The 40-foot-by-40-foot canvas labyrinth is a replica of the 12th-century Chartres Cathedral labyrinth in France.It is located in the sanctuary of Binkley Baptist Church, corner of U.S. 15-501 and Willow Drive. The walk will be open the rest of this week on the following schedule: Wednesday, April 20, hours 30 06:30-17; Thursday, April 21, 05:30-20 and 30 hours Friday, April 22, 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Friday service St. on Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. around the maze. The labyrinth is an ancient tradition in many religions. Visitors are encouraged to walk at their own pace, pause, reflect and pray.The eight churches are sponsoring the maze Chapel of the Cross, the Church of Reconciliation, Episcopal Church of the Advocate, St. Thomas More, the United Church of Chapel Hill United Methodist University and Binkley Baptist, all Chapel Hill, and Unity Spiritual Life Center in Durham. Holy Week events at Binkley Baptist include reflections and meditations piano organ at 11 am Friday. Worship 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. will consist of four 15-minute mini services. A Retreat on Holy Saturday 9:00 to 12:30 will be held in the sanctuary.Participants will explore the paschal mystery of death and resurrection in the body with Interplay.
