Oceanside motel owner among dozens nabbed in prostitution ring

The owner of an Oceanside motel and his son have been arrested along with dozens of others for allegedly running a gang-based prostitution ring, according to law enforcement officials.

A report from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) states authorities allege the "Oceanside Crips Enterprise" had more than two-dozen girls and women prostitute themselves at low-cost motels in north San Diego County.

According to a spokesman for ICE in San Diego, the women ranged in age from as young as 13 to young adults. Authorities allege the Enterprise has done more as of late to promote its for-profit criminal activity in San Diego County and around the U.S., including prostitution. 

The owner of the Oceanside Travelodge Motel, Vinod Patel, was among those taken into custody. If convicted of racketeering conspiracy, each defendant is looking at up to two decades behind bars. Patel's son, Hitesh, was also arrested.

According to the allegations, a pair of defendants allegedly obtained between $1,000 a $3,000 a day from one prostitute's payments in 2007 and 2008. Another defendant is accused of prostituting a 15-year-old girl at the Travelodge hotel three years ago.

Authorities allege the Patels charged higher room fees to the Crips and provided them rooms in "discreet" location to avoid raising suspicions.

"The Patels were targeted in this case because they not only knowingly assisted the Crips use the facility to conduct prostitution and other gang activities, but they personally profited from it," authorities allege.

With this latest bust, authorities will hopefully get a leg up on gang activity in the Oceanside area, which we all know has been running rampant over the years.
