FDA Approves Roche's New HPV Test
April 20, 2011 - The FDA has approved Roche's new test for human papillomavirus (HPV), the first-pass test to accurately identify the two strains of HPV that cause 70% of cancers of the cervix.
The human papillomavirus sexually transmitted causes almost all cervical cancers. Current HPV tests can detect the presence or absence of over a dozen types of HPV associated with cancer. Roche cobas 4800 new test does this, too, but also tells a woman if she has HPV-16 or HPV-18.
Another HPV test approved by the FDA, Hologic Inc.The Cervista HPV 16/18, can identify these types of HPV, but dangerous only used in women who have tested HPV-positive tests less sensitive.
Roche in a study of over 47,000 women, those who tested positive for HPV-16 had a 31.5% risk of precancerous cervical lesions.
"Identification of genotypes of high risk HPV provides important additive Pap smear. Prior to the above two types of risk, HPV-16 and HPV-18 may provide predictive information about the risks of a woman to have precancerous lesions or cervical cancer, "said Mark H.Stoler, MD, professor of surgical pathology at the University of Virginia Health System.
Stoler led the study and Roche has been a consultant for Roche and several other manufacturers of HPV testing.
The new test detects precancerous Roche over 90% of the time.
