Local sitcom adds 'Sopranos' actor to cast
David Proval, who also had roles in “Mean Streets” and “The Shawshank Redemption,” has joined “Workers' Comp,” the comedy created by 19-year-olds Harrison Sanborn and Castille Landon.The plot revolves around a small workers' comp insurance company in Florida called Pinnacle. The pilot has garnered an unusually professional retinue since the script got passed around.
Peter Bentley, sound man for the Emmy winning series “Mad Men”; Aaron Spelling's script supervisor Sandra Cole; “Murder She Wrote” story editor Stan Cole; “Taking Woodstock” associate producer David Sauers, and production manager Elayne Schneiderman Schmidt of Venice, whose credits include “I Am Number Four,” “Up in the Air” and “Ali.”
Landon has a central acting role and Sanborn, whose father Ken Sanborn founded Sanborn Studios in Lakewood Ranch last year, is director and co-writer.
Sauers, who has a number of films in development including “Gringo” and “Ocean Tribe,” helped land Proval.
“I handled all the original casting,” Sauers said. “I actually know David Proval. He is a friend."
“We wanted to write in a part to give Morgan Fairchild's character a little more depth, a little more secrecy in a way, and he ended up being a good guy for it. He plays Joe Basq. He owns an insurance company that Pinnacle is trying to get an agreement with,” Sauers said.
Basq is likely to come across in the comedy as a seemingly good guy with a sleazy, edgy side, Sauers indicated.
Proval, strongly considered for the role as Tony Soprano in “The Sopranos,” instead became a recurring character.
As Richie Aprile, Proval “would have no problem killing you in front of your family and nobody would talk about it afterwards,” Sauers recalled.
