Tonganoxie Recreation Commission honors Kimberlin as part of Summer Kickoff Party

Russ Kimberlin was part of the Tonganoxie Recreation Commission for 40 years.

Whether it was as a coach in youth sport, a board member or employee, Kimberlin has for many years for the organization.

"I worked long and hard, but it was rewarding," said Kimberlin Chieftain Park on Saturday.

Kimberlin was named as the latest inductee into the Wall of Fame at the annual TRC Recreation Commission's Summer Kickoff Party.

Wall of Fame began in 2007 as a way to honor those who have contributed to the TRC over the years.

Kimberlin was inducted into 15th. He was a founding member of the Tonganoxie Junior Chamber in 1963 and also served on the City Council Tonganoxie. Although the Council has worked to create the Centennial Park, which is the park of U.S. Highway 24-40 and Washington Street.

Hometown McLouth, Kimberlin has served on the TRC board in 1994 when the first director of the commission, Mark Zerr, was hired. Zerres is Wall of Fame.

John Evans II was the master of ceremonies, delivering backstory Kimberlin and list of accomplishments and activities with the Recreation Commission.

Kimberlin began his association with the TRC in 1974 as a volunteer baseball coach. After his coaching days, he was appointed to the commission in 1985.

In addition to pressure for the Centennial Park and to assist rental Zerr, he served as chairman of the Committee 1986-96. He also contributed to the development of the current baseball / softball complex at the Leavenworth County Fair. Kimberlin also served as president of the Kaw Valley Baseball Association was / Softball and still serves as treasurer of the league.

In total, Kimberlin served for 12 years on the board of the Commission until his last term expired in 1997.

In 2002, he returned to the Recreation Commission as a full-time worker and was a maintenance supervisor from 2002-09. He continues to serve that part of the Commission in time, especially with fleet maintenance Chieftain.

Kimberlin graduated from McLouth High School and moved to Tonganoxie in 1959 with his wife, Charlene. They have one son, Mark, and two grandchildren, Taylor and Colby.

The induction was one of the last events at kickoff of the game, which included a hot dog roast, games for children and grab an event in which youngsters had the chance to get money in bales of hay. Magician Keith Willis also performed at the event.
