5 people die every 4 days from suicide in Alberta.

Suicide kills more people each year than traffic accidents in Alberta.

Every year in Canada more than 3,500 people die by suicide - this is equivalent to the population of many small towns in rural Alberta and 4 times the populations of the Town of Bashaw.

More senior males (aged 65-69) commit suicide than teenage males (aged 15-19) in Alberta.

Suicide is the leading cause of injury deaths for the age group 65-74.

Between 1993 and 1998, there were 34 deaths by suicide in the City and County of Camrose.

 

Facts

Two-thirds of adolescents will consider suicide before graduating from high school.

One out of every ten students will attempt suicide before graduating from high school.

Females attempt suicide three times more often than males.

Suicide occurs equally among the rich, middle class and poor.

Males complete suicide three times more often than females.

Aboriginal/Native youth are six times more likely to commit suicide.

Suicide rates in Alberta show that the group most likely to commit suicide are individuals aged 50 to 54.
